Each winter, Steel Wheel Brewery hosts a winter course series, highlighting experts in the area and sharing their knowledge (and a few pints) with our community!

Understanding the Tastes of Beer

Ever had a beer that has an off flavour that you just can’t identify? Join Mitch Tuckey, Head Brewer here at Steel Wheel as he presents some of the common off-flavours that can be found in beer & what causes them.

The Art of Making Sushi

In this hands-on workshop we will be making 3 rolls - California rolls, Spicy Salmon roll, tuna hand roll! All ingredients will be provided! Just come have fun, meet some new people who love sushi and sample what you make!

Pasta Making for the Beginner

Janette Blei, Red Seal Chef

In this hand-on workshop our Red Seal Chef Janette will lead the group through making sheet and ribbon pasta by hand. You will also learn to make a red sauce based filling.. Bring a rolling pin and your enthusiasm! No pasta machines necessary!

Birds of Prey

Wild Ontario, University of Guelph

Join Wild Ontario and their feathered friends from the University of Guelph for an introduction to the province's most incredible hunting birds! In this program, you'll learn all about the amazing skills and adaptations that help raptors survive in the wild. You'll also meet some special birds and through their stories, learn about how humans can impact wild birds and what you can do to help! There will be live birds at this talk.

Butchering: An Education on the Whole Beast

Jamie Waldron, Butcher

Come watch Jamie butcher a locally-sourced & responsibly-raised pig. In this course you will receive a guided explanation on the various cuts of meat & ways to prepare them. At the end of the course the meat, dressed & wrapped, will be available for purchase.

Learn to Tie Dye

Emma Kurkuk and Deb Kurluk, Tie Dye Enthusiasts

Come join us for our tie dye shirt workshop! We will walk you through folding and dying your shirt, and provide you with instructions for washing it out the next day. Our high quality dyes keep their colour, wash after wash, leaving you with a shirt you can brag about to all your friends. Come see how a childhood craft became our family obsession.

An Intro into Mushroom Foraging

Luke Eckstein, Experienced Forager and Nerdy Biologist

We will discuss the benefits of mushroom foraging, how to do it safely and sustainably, parts of fungi, native and non native, their identification, their seasons, how to protect fungi by knowing more about them, learn a few recipes and more! Join us to nurture your curiosity and feed your mind and body with greater knowledge of the plant and fungal kingdoms.

Spring Floral Centerpiece

Heather Jerrard, Landscape Artist

Join us for this hands-on workshop and create a centrepiece for your table! All items including fresh flowers, natural elements, decorative items, floral foam, containers and a finishing bow will be provided. Tips and techniques on floral arranging will be shared throughout the presentation.

BBQing 101

Scott Jacobson, Winner of RibFeST

Join Canadian BBQ Grand Champion Scott as he leads you through :

  • How to start a charcoal BBQ.

  • How to prep a chicken and rack of ribs.

  • How to maintain heat with Charcoal Q.

  • How to cut the finished product.

Everyone will get some chicken and ribs to try during the course. This course will be held outside, so please dress accordingly.
